Getting Sick == Losing Weight

Remember that scene from The Devil Loves Prada where Ann Hathaway's character gets complemented for looking thin and follows it up with I'm just one stomach flu away from my goal weight." Because apparently when she gets sick, she loses weight.

Raise your hand if that happens to you.

<crickets>

Yeah, me neither.

Until this year.

Usually when I get sick, especially when I throw up, I comfort myself with the visions of all the weight I'm going to lose because I am too sick to eat. Except I never do. Maybe I won't eat for hours, but at some point, I get hungry and start chowing down. Sometimes I eat so much at the end of the illness that I actually gain weight.

So imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago, I got sick enough to sleep most of the day and the next day I got on the scale and had dropped four pounds!

Now, it didn't last because I'm sure it was mostly dehydration because I not only didn't eat much but I didn't drink much either.

But that's not the point. The point is: for once in my life, my body reacted the way it was "supposed to." You know, like a normal person who doesn't have a weight problem.

Another cool thing that happened to me is that we had a party at work and today someone emailed us all a group photo from it. I looked at the photo and I thought "Hmm. Nice shot."

That's right. I looked at a picture of myself and I had absolutely nothing critical to say about it. Yeah, it's a frigging miracle.

No, I'm being serious. I have never looked at a photo of myself and not had something about it that I wanted to change. Never. In my entire life.

I think I'm going to enjoy it while I can, because I know how these things go and improviself-esteem is never a straight path.
