IMAZ '10 or Bust!

So I did it. I signed up to do an Ironman. I was going to post "I'm not sure what got into me" and "I know it's going to be tough" and a bunch of disclaimers like that. But then I realized... it would be a lie! I know what got into me and I think it's going to be the most fun of anything I've ever done in my life. So there.

I've been toying with doing an Ironman for a while. I'm not sure when the idea went from "I'll never do that" to "I must do that." But at some point during this past season, I got the bug. This is something I must do and that I feel like I owe it to myself to do.

So why all the disclaimers? Because the general public looks at something like an Ironman as an impossible task that only complete nutters would do. At least that's my guess.

I don't feel like a complete nutter. Or obsessed. Or that doing an Ironman is impossible. It will be hard, of course, but I have a plan and 11 months to execute it.

I'm already up to Half-Ironman distances in my swim and bike and I've biked 125 miles over two days and 80 miles in one day so I'm close to Ironman distances on that as well. The run, as usual, is lagging a bit behind, but I have done a Half-marathon and I'm confident I can get up to two hours of running by next Nov.

Not only am I thinking Ironman, but I'm thinking Kona Qualifying. I don't think that's realistic for this season. I'm aiming for finishing my Ironman in the 13-14 hour range and I'd need to finish around in around 11:30 to Kona Qualify. But I think I could do that eventually. I'd have to get my swim under 1.5 hours, my bike slightly under 6 and my run slightly under 4 hours and those times are all within my grasp, in my not-so-humble opinion.
